Annelise Coste, Phantombüro
The Projectroom is everywhere
Understanding life as an experiment; communicating by unusual means and interventions is the concern of Annelise Coste and the Frankfurter Phantombüro.
The Phantombüro (phantom office) has been carrying out facetious-provocative activities in urban space for years in Frankfurt. In the process the city’s infrastructure is questioned and replenished manifoldly, be it converting a container into a swimming pool, planning the transfiguration of a parking garage roof into a public park, or reconfiguring their studio as a club and gallery. For the show at Meyer Riegger the gallery space is turned into a stormy landscape. Located somewhere between a cheap film set and the ambience of a second-hand store, an attempt is made to reconstruct the photograph in the showcase in front of the gallery on several levels. The fact that this attempt is doomed to fail is predictable, due to the impossibility of reproducing nature. Is nature the best artist, or are reconstructions and replicas outdated in the age of technical reproducibility?
Annelise Coste constantly maps her thoughts, ideas, fears and observations on paper. She deals with individual everyday occurrences as well as philosophy or the latest comic superheroes. She utilizes her own insecurity as a chance to disregard conventions of order, grammar or composition and to develop her own biography and pictorial language through permanent improvisation. Thus she creates poetically caustic comments that seem to oscillate between ingeniousness and craziness. It is left to the visitor to bring his own meaning and order into the drawings, which are spread out on a table. As a reply to our request for a portfolio and a biography she sent only the sentence: THE PROJECTROOM IS EVERYWHERE.
